The Susevabhimani Awards night

The Susevabhimani Awards night was organized by the Department of Social Services to recognize the efforts of organization working to uplift and develop the lives of the less fortunate in Sri Lanka. It was held on the 21st of September 2018 at the Grand Monarch Reception Hall and Sunera Foundation was invited to perform a dance item at the event. Our participants from the Dehiwala workshop performed to entertain the audience present.

World Children’s Day Celebrations

To commemorate World Children’s Day, the Divisional Secretariat of Kamburupitiya organized a programme, for which our Kamburupitiya workshop participants were invited to perform a dance item after which our trainers were given the opportunity to speak about the work of Sunera Foundation with the disabled community of Sri Lanka.

Celebrating Special People

The Ministry of Social Services and the Divisional Secretariat Negombo jointly organized a festival to appreciate and commemorate the differently abled people in our society. It was held on the 12th of November 2018 and our participants from the Negombo workshop were invited to perform and showcase their many talents to the community.

World Disability Day Performances

Our participants from the Kurunegala, Akuressa and Nattandiya workshops were invited to perform dance items at the programmes organized to mark World Disability Day. The events were organized by the Divisional Secretariats of the districts. Invitations such as these are proof to the growth of Sunera and the positive contribution made in the lives of the disabled young people towards their integration into mainstream activity.

Dream Cricket 2018!

The Don Bradman Foundation in Australia has developed a version of cricket for differently abled young people who love the sport. Named ‘Dream Cricket’, this sport gives these young people and opportunity to play the sport of their dreams while building friendships with others who share common interest in cricket. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Kandy, this year too, our participants from the Kandy and Katugastota workshop participated in the event. They had an enjoyable day in the field with the bat and the ball!

Cultural Shows for the Differently Abled!

A Cultural show for the differently abled person was held in the Matara District on the 11th of December 2018. Our workshop participants were invited to perform at the show which was organized by the Divisional Secretariat of the Matara District. Our Matara workshop participants performed a dance item which was enjoyed by all.

Health comes first!

A medical workshop was organized on how to prevent infectious diseases and was held in Aluthgama on the 12th of September 2018. This was organized by the Parents Committee of the workshop and was conducted by Dr. M.H.M. Sakeer. Dr. Sakeer addressed a number of issues about infectious diseases , eating healthy and good hygiene to the 28 parents who were present at the workshop.


A similar workshop was held on the 06th of December 2018 in Maharagama.


The mobile dental clinic visited the Dehiwala workshop on the 15th of December 2018 and afforded the Dehiwala workshop participants an opportunity to receive oral medical attention. Their parents were given advice about healthy eating habits, the importance of dental hygiene and the different types of oral diseases. It was a very useful workshop and the participants were given a toothbrush and toothpaste to take home. The Lions Club too joined this workshop and distributed gifts to all the participants.

Counseling Workshop for the Parents!

A Counseling workshop was conducted for the parents of Maharagama workshop which was organized by the Parents Committee of the workshop. About 35 parents participated in this workshop which was conducted by Mr. Lalith Wanniarachchi, Counselling Officer of the Maharagama District Secretariat. Mr. Wanniarachchi addressed the parents about how to build good relationships with their children, how to handle challenges faced by the children and the parents and helpful tips on how lessen the day to day stress faced by all. It was a very beneficial workshop for the parents..


A similar workshop was held on the 06th of December 2018 in Maharagama.

Fun while Cooking

A thoroughly enjoyable cookery day took place at the Horana workshop the 19th of November 2018. Our participants made some tasty food and drinks with the help of our trainers which they were happy to make and serve!


‘Tis the Season to be Jolly’

The festive season was enjoyed by our participants with many workshops holding Christmas programmes throughout the month of December.

The Christmas programmes in the plantation sector workshops were held on the 17th,18th and 19th of December 2018. The participants of the Moca, Yullifield, Bogawantalawa and …… estate workshops performed shorts skits and sang carols in the presence of the many who had gathered to enjoy the season.

The Kandy workshop participants were hosted to a Christmas party by the old Trinitians’ Sports Club on the 23rd of December 2018. Our trainers lended their support in helping the organizers at the event.

A Christmas programme was held at Bird Park Rajagiriya organized by the Parents Committee of our Dehiwala workshop on the 08th of December 2018. The participants, parents and the trainers had a good time of celebration together with lunch and gifts for all. The highlight of the evening was a guest performance by popular singer Saman De Silva

The Parents Committee of Maharagama organized a Christmas programme on the 13th of December 2018. Participants, trainers and parents were treated to lots of festive cheer! It was their first Christmas party at the workshop and was a big success especially with a visit from Santa!

A morning of Christmas Carols was presented by our participants in the Negombo and Wattala workshops on the 12th of December 2018 and was held at the Kadol Kale Church in Negombo. The Parents of the participants joined their children in singing the carols for the audience present which made the programme more meaningful.

The Aluthgama workshop too had their Christmas programme on the same day at the workshop premises itself. This too was organized by the Parents Committee of the workshop and was enjoyed by all with lots of singing, dancing and seasonal treats.


Training and Reviewing

Our second Training of Trainers workshop took place in September 2018. Our trainers were taken through yoga techniques and the uses of yoga by instructress Renuka Widanagamage. The techniques learnt will be used as part of our workshops exercises. The Trainers Review Meeting followed this and workshop.


Some R & R!

The HQ staff and Trainers had a day out together which was enjoyed by all building friendship and camaraderie as one team.


Jewelry Sale by Kadambari

Kadambari Jewels held a jewelry sale in aid of Sunera Foundation on the 29th of November 2018. We thank designer Rashantha Devaneson for her continued generosity in selling her exquisitely handcrafted pieces in aid of our work.
